Palm leaf plates are not one size. The areca palm leaf range runs from a 2.5 inch bowl to a 22 inch serving tray, in round, square, rectangular, oval, compartment, and specialty shapes, all in packs of 25, 50, or 100. Picking the right size and shape for your menu or event is the difference between plates that look generous and plates that look mean or overflow. Here is the full range we make, with real dimensions, and how to choose for each use.
I manufacture and export these, so these are the actual sizes that come off our line, not a generic chart. Sizes are given in inches because that is how the trade quotes them; a rounded plate is measured across its widest point.

How to choose the right plate size
Size the plate to the course, not the table. As a working guide:
- Appetizers, starters, and dessert: 6 to 7 inch round or a 4 to 6 inch square plate. Small enough to feel like a portion, large enough to plate neatly.
- Main course: 9 to 10 inch round or square. This is the standard dinner-plate size and the one caterers order most.
- Buffet, family-style, and grazing: the oval trays. A 16.5 x 10 inch or 22 x 12 inch tray works as a platter or a compostable grazing and charcuterie board.
- Full plated meals in one piece: the compartment plates, so a rice, curry, and side portion stay separate. The 12 inch 4 compartment is the common thali and catering choice.
- Wet or portioned food: bowls. A 4 to 5 inch bowl suits a curry, salad, or dessert; the 2.5 inch bowl is a dip, chutney, or tasting cup.
Shapes, and why they matter
Round is the default and the most universal. Square and rectangular read as more modern and are favoured for canapes, sushi, and grazing tables. Oval trays are the serving and platter format and the base for our disposable charcuterie boards. Compartment plates hold a full meal without mixing and are the format for our divided plates and meal trays. Specialty shapes such as the heart, boat, eye, and pyramid are for signature plating and premium retail, where the plate itself is part of the presentation.
Depth: plates, bowls, and trays
Beyond the width, choose by depth. Shallow plates are for dry or plated food. Bowls hold liquid-heavy food such as curry, soup, or dessert without spillage. Trays have a raised lip for serving and transport. Because areca palm leaf is pressed from a single naturally rigid sheath, all three are sturdy enough for a full portion and hot food, and none of them go soggy the way paper or thin bagasse can. For how that rigidity is produced, see how palm leaf plates are made.
